The Bronx River Path is a multi-use mostly paved path between the Kensico Dam in
Valhalla and Palmer Ave in Bronxville.   The path parallels the Bronx River, the Bronx
River Pkwy and MetroNorth's Harlem Valley Line thru the Bronx River Reservation and
is mostly continuous, with a major gap in the Scarsdale area.  I usually ride the Bronx
River Path southbound, but either direction, or a roundtrip works well.  The trip is about
11 miles each way.  There are numerous connections with MetroNorth.  The first time I
did this path, was on foot.  Since I got my bike, I have cycled it numerous times.  The
northern section seems older and the surface is in bad shape in many areas.  This
map might help you find your way. At some point in the future, a continuous path along
the Bronx River, from the Kensico Dam to the East River on the Bronx waterfront is
feasable.

The road on top of the Kensico Dam was
closed for construction from July 7th 2005,
and is scheduled to reopen to pedestrians and bikes in January 2007.  The path is
easy to follow south from the base of the dam to the North White Plains train station,
where it goes thru the parking lot on the west side of the station.  The area around the
White Plains train station was confusing to me.  It seemed like the only way was to take
a sidewalk with a 'no pedestrians' sign, but the last time i biked this section in August
2006, a new route was being constructed.  It should be ready for the 2007 season.
After passing the station, the path crosses the Bronx River a few times before ending
just north of the Hartsdale train station.  From here, I loop up over to the west portion of
the station and bike down Aqueduct (Pipeline) Road.  This road has no shoulder, but is
not heavily travelled.  About a mile down, is Edgemont Place.  Continue on Aqueduct
Road, half way thru and 'S' turn and look for a small opening in the guardrail on the left
side of the road.  This path, which is only suitable for mountain bikes, leads past the
west side of the Scarsdale train station.  (An alternative is to stay on the east side of
the tracks in Hartsdale and ride thru Scarsdale)  Head south on Garth and look for the
path on the right as it enters the woods behind some apartment buildings.  Continue
south to  Harney Road.

From Harney Road to Palmer Road in Bronxville, the path is in much better shape.  In
Crestwood the path seems to loop back north around the lake.  Just keep going onto a
short shoulder ride, and then the path will reappear.  From Bronxville, Midland Ave can
be taken to hook up with the
Old Croton Aqueduct Trail and the South County Trail in
Yonkers.

Lunch Spots:  There are plenty of places along the way.  I usually continue on to
Midland Ave in Yonkers and lunch in Tibbett's Brook Park.
